Greetings from beautiful, hot Lexington KY! When Sam was about a year and a half old, my cousin Gloria-Jean and I embarked on part of my book tour with Sam by car. We drove from South Bend, Indiana and visited great bookstores in Dayton, OH, Lexington and Louisville, KY and finally ended in Chicago. Memories of that trip have made me smile all morning. I just called Gloria-Jean and as soon as she heard where I was we began to reminisce. Part of our mission was to eat local specialties in each city, a mission I always stick to as I travel. That means that this afternoon I am off in search of a Hot Brown. And last night when I arrived at 10:30 I had a glass of bourbon that was very yummy.
Tonight I read at Joseph-Beth here at 7; tomorrow I will read at Carmichael's in Louisville at 7. So excited to read at and visit these two great independent bookstores!
It has been a busy few weeks on the road. Great events in Hingham, Chatham, and South Dartmouth, MA. What a joy to meet so many readers and to share stories with them.
Saturday night was especially special. My wonderful friends Nan and Brian hosted a party at their beautiful house in Denver for me and the organization Chinese Charities, whose director, Joshua, helped them and thousands of others adopt babies from China. It was a perfect evening in Denver, warm and breezy. There was good food, good wine and great people, as well as books provided by another fabulous independent bookstore, The Tattered Cover.
My buddy Jane traded in frequent flyer miles to spend the weekend in Denver with me. On Sunday morning we stayed late in bed drinking coffee and girl talking. Then we took the 16th Street free shuttle downtown. Saw Coors Stadium and the state capitol before we went in to the Oxford Hotel for sugar scrubs. We emerged exfoliated and soft and smelling really good! Shopped for western wear==got t shirts with cowboys on them for Sam and Annabelle--and then sampled some really good local microbrew beer before she headed east back to RI and I flew south to KY.
Lots of fun readings coming up: Thursday at 6 in Newport (check EVENTS here for details), Friday at 2 at the Dennis Library and Saturday at 3 in Middletown, RI. Hope to see some of you at one of these events!
