Hooray! The Acela has wifi! So I can check emails and update my blog on my way to NYC!

What a great few weeks of events. Thank you to everybody who came to see me in Pawling, NY; Marion, MA; Frederick, MD; Brewster, MA; Barrington, RI; and Osterville, MA. I love meeting everyone, and especially love meeting your daughters from China and hearing your own adoption stories.

Tomorrow night I will be in Portland, Maine at the wonderful event: Author! Author! Maine Writers & Publishers Alliance 35th Birthday Party

Really looking forward to it, and to seeing my good buddy Ann Nash, who will be my date for the night!

On Friday I am off with Sam to look at more colleges--Ithaca and Cornell--then I continue to Chautauqua where I will be teaching for a week and Sam goes back to RI to rehearse for BEYOND THERAPY, which opens at the Hope Artistes Village in Pawtucket on August 19.

I love spending a week every other summer at Chautaqua. The place really feels like going back in time--no cars, bells tolling, boys selling newspapers on the green. Writers used to stay in apartments above a beautiful old house, but now we are in modern digs in the building where we also teach, which makes it easy to sleep late and still get to class on time. Annabelle attends the little school, and even gets to ride a yellow school bus there. Another plus: I always take a ride to Lilydale with Clara (she runs the writers program)and go to a psychic. Lilydale is a neighborhood of just psychics! They live in little cottages and tell the future all day. So lots to look forward to next week.

Please read my essay about Sam's impending departure to college (ok, ok, it's a year away...) in the most recent issue of Good Housekeeping. And tonight my essay on Steven Slater, the Jet Blue flight attendant who exited the plane via the evacuation slide after a fight with a passenger, will be p on Salon.com.

Not reading enough this summer, which bothers me. I'm kind of stuck in the last of those Dragon Tattoo books (this one is The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest). I don't like it as much as I did the other two, yet I have to finish it since it's the end of the trilogy. I am totally addicted to the PBS series on New York, which I am watching on DVD. Started the new bio of Pearl Buck. Love it.

Sick of how hot and humid this summer has been and I am absolutely ready for fall. Yesterday I went to Nordstrom and fondled all the new short boots that are out. Cannot wait to buy a pair and wear them walking through autumn leaves!

Oh. And dish rags, dish rags, dish rags...
